09 - Relative Caregiver Conference to be held at Kirtland Community College. On-site registration from 8:15 am to 9:00 am. Keynote speaker presentation followed by a variety of workshops that participants can choose from, such as: 40 Assets for Today's Teens; Power of Play; More Than Just Saying "No"; Helping Children Make Changes; Understanding the Court System; Understanding ADD/ADHD. It all started in the spring of 2002. The snow started to melt and the rain began to fall. It was during this wondrous Michigan change of the seasons that the chrome fish started to migrate up the river and three anglers came together to chase these elusive fish known as steelhead! What they didn’t know was how their lives would forever change…for they soon realized how they all not only loved to steelhead fish, but to pick and sing bluegrass music. 23 - Equinox,Scottish Ethnic / Folk Music: Family Community Event - Celebrating the traditional music of Scotland and the Shetland Islands. 01- Vintage Base Ball played again this season @ Hartwick Pines State Park.  Baseball has been a part of northern Michigan since the 1870s and the Hartwick Pines “Swampers” will again be interpreting this part of the local history by playing their fourth season of “vintage” base ball at Hartwick Pines State Park this summer.  The Swampers will play a full season of ten games against other vintage base ball teams beginning June 1st and an exhibition game on July 6th, where anyone who is interested can take part and play baseball by rules of 1860.  Come on out to cheer on the “Swampers” this season or even better, become a member of the team!  On June 1: Swampers vs. Northville Eclipse. 02 - Sign up begins for the "Catch the Reading Bug" Summer Reading Program at all branches of the Crawford County Library System. So swarm over to the library and join in on some summer reading ant-ics.

07 - Hanson Hills Challenge Trail Run @ Hanson Hills Recreation Area - This challenging 5-mile course begins and ends in front of Hanson Hills Little Smokey Cross Country Lodge.  Your run is over hilly and some sandy terrain that cuts through Hanson's beautifully wooded forest.  Check in on Saturday, June 7th from 7:30 am to 9 am at Hanson Hills main lodge. Race begins at 9:00 am Awards: Customized Hanson Hills Trail Run Socks to first 50 participants registered.  Awards to top three finishers in each age group.  Prize for first male and female overall winner.  Early Registration $15 postmarked by May 28, 2008. 07 - The Gene Krupa Orchestra @ Kirtland Center for the Performing Arts 8:00 p.m. Carnegie Hall, January 16, 1938... The Benny Goodman Orchestra swings its way into big band history! And Gene Krupa, pounding out SING SING SING on the tom toms, made his own bit of big band history that night which would change the course of drumming forever. By the late 1930’s, Gene Krupa had emerged as a national phenomenon and his appearances on stage and film catapulted him to superstar status, prompting him to step out from Goodman’s shadow and set out on his own. 12 - Senior Center will host a trip to Comerica Park to watch the Detroit Tigers take on the Chicago White Sox.  Seats are located in the right field grandstand,also known as "Home Run Alley" so plan on bringing your glove to catch that home run ball!  Cost for the trip is $60, which includes transportation on a Charter bus, tickets to the game, and a sack meal for the ride home.  The bus leaves from the Grayling Senior Center located at 308 Lawndale St at 8 am, with plans to return home by 9 pm. 18 - Hospitality Training Program for Northeast Michigan - Crawford County  Hospitality training for both front line employees and employers will take place Wednesday, June 18th from 9 am to 1 pm at the Nature Center in Grayling City Park.  Sponsored by Michigan’s Sunrise Side Travel Association through a grant from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth.  The program will outline the customer service basics such as; Why is Customer Service Important, Developing Customer Orientation, Moments of Truth and Customer Contact, The Greeting, Telephone Skills, Barriers to Customer Satisfaction, Overcoming Barriers. The Unhappy Customer and Regional Attractions.  For the Business Owner, Manager, Supervisor there will be an introduction to Customer Service, Goal Setting Business Plan / Money Management Marketing Plan, Cultivating a Service Culture, Empowerment, Personnel Management, Time Management and Regional Attractions. 19 - The Grayling Summer Music Series presents The Banjo Picker & Friends on the lawn of Citizen's Bank 7 -9 pm.  This trio consists of Barry Jon Van Guilder, his daughter Rachel and his son Andrew.  They perform all types of music from Traditional Country, Bluegrass, Folk, Comedy and Standards.  The instruments they use are the guitar, bass guitar, banjo, and mandolin.  They have written, recorded and released over 50 songs.

26 - Grayling Summer Music Series presents Octoben German Band on the lawn of Citizen's Bank 7 -9 pm. This 9-member band consists of Ken Fourn on clarinet, Jan Fourn on clarinet, Les Jackson on trumpet, Phil Bickel on trombone, Jon Sprandle on tuba, Matt Spears on accordion, Dennis Pienta on drums, Steve Sedore the German/English announcer and Heather Fourn the puppeteer.  They perform a variety of music including marches, ethnic folk songs and dances like the Scottish, waltz and polka.  The band members are Michigan music educators who teach in the public schools, universities and private studio.  Their music has been enjoyed at October Fests, music festivals, school assemblies and community concerts all over.  Octoben is included in the 2006-2009 Michigan Arts & Humanities Touring Directory.

04 - 4th of July Celebration Sponsored by the Grayling Youth Booster Club.  The festivities will begin at noon at the Grayling City Park with music and live entertainment throughtout the day, including a varity of contests for children, teens and adults - karaoke, limbo, hula hoop and dancing.  The free fishing contest for kids up to 12 years old will be held from noon to 1:30 pm.  There will be other activities for the kids throughout the day - arts & craft and assorted games.  The Booster Club concession stand will be serving kielbasa, hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, ice cold drinks and more.  Fireworks at dark!  Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the day!

04 - Grayling Summer Music presents T.J. Craven in Grayling City Park, sponsored by Grayling Promotional Association from 7 -9 pm. This soon-to-be 12 year-old hit the southeastern Michigan music scene last year in a big way placing second in the Wayne County and Michigan State Fair competitions, and winning the Arts, Beats and Eats competition.  He belts out country songs over recorded tracks, impersonates Elvis and flat out charms his way into the hearts of his audiences.

04 - Duck Race during the performance of T.J. Craven, numbered ducks will be released from the railroad bridge in Grayling City Park at 8 pm.  Ducks will race up to the finish line at the pedestrain bridge. First duck to cross the finish line wins grand prize. 10 - Graying Summer Music Series presents The McKinney Washtub Two on the lawn of Citizen's Bank 7 - 9 pm. This husband and wife duo, Judy and Whitt McKinney, have performed as a duo for 5 years and as a family band for several years before that.  Their act includes the guitar, washtub base, washboard, mandolin, flute, bodhron, ukulele, and various percussion instruments.  They describe what they do as “storysinging and songtelling” – their own style of interpreting traditional and original material.  Their music is played on radio stations all over and they are a sure crowd-pleaser.

12 - Beyond the Garden Wall Garden Club is excited to present its 2008 Garden Walk on July 12, 2008 from 11AM to 5 PM. This has become a favorite annual event celebrating Gardens of Northern Michigan. Extraordinary gardens abound, providing inspirations for the novice and garden enthusiast alike.  This years gardens feature a diverse mix, from Lake and Riverside retreats, to forest hideaways and small space gardens. Water features, extensive perennial gardens, eclectic garden art, bountiful containers, water features, rock gardens and even a railway running through! Annuals, Perennials, evergreen and native plantings abound. Do not be surprised if you catch a glimpse of hummingbirds, butterfly and other native wildlife, making this garden walk, a photographers paradise. You will even have the chance to see some new plant varieties, not yet in the marketplace as one of our home owners trials new varieties for some of the nations leading plant breeders.  In addition to the visual inspirations, you will have the opportunity to speak to fellow gardeners and glean tips from deer-proofing your garden, to encouraging plants to grow in the sandy dry soil so common to the area. You will even be provided with tip sheets at each of the locations, making it simple to emulate some of these great garden secrets in your own yard!  This years garden walk will prove to provide something for everyone. Whether you want to go for a leisurely stroll, or garner ideas for your next garden project, or just curious about some of the gardens that flank the cottages, log cabins, and city homes, you are sure to enjoy.  This event is sponsored by Beyond the Garden Wall Garden Club, a Not for Profit organization, providing educational and inspirational events for its members and the community. Additionally, the Garden Club sponsors several gardens within the Grayling community. Proceeds from the event go to these community gardens and events.  Tickets go on sale at the end of June and will be available for just $5 at the following Grayling businesses. 17 - Grayling Summer Music Series presents The Dinosaurs on the lawn of Citizen's Bank 7 - 9 pm. A group of four guys and one gal, Dale Reiger, Tim and Ruth Whitmore, George Sanford and Mark Stormzand.  They love to play classic rock and roll and like to say they are PLAYING MUSIC THAT WILL NEVER DISAPPEAR.  They play everything from The Beatles to ZZ Top and lots of songs in between.  Their have great audience interaction and give a good performance.  They love to play music that makes people remember when they were young.  Their instruments include the guitar, base guitar, drums and the congas and harmonica.

Course begins and ends at the Grayling High School Football Stadium.  This flat course travels down the Wayne C. 31 - Grayling Summer Music Series presents The Wise Guys on the lawn of Citizen's Bank 7 - 9 pm. A three-member band consisting of locals Thane Doremire, Jack Beckwith and Dan Beckwith.  This group is a local favorite and has been since the guys were in high school.  They all have "real" jobs and families now and still get regular requests to perform in and around the area. They play guitar, base guitar and drums and their vocal sounds of the hits when we were your bring everyone back to a place of happy reminiscing.
